Speak English Cafe is an online community that connects English learners with volunteer native English speaking teachers for real, conversational practice. We believe fluency comes from talking with real people, not filling in blanks on an app.

It's both — and neither in the traditional sense. There are no rigid syllabi or homework assignments. Instead, you join a structured community where you meet regularly with a dedicated teacher, attend optional group sessions, and grow at your own pace through genuine conversation.

Apps are great for building vocabulary and grammar in isolation, but they can't replicate the spontaneity and confidence that comes from real conversation. At Speak English Cafe, every session is live, unscripted, and tailored to you — not a pre-recorded lesson path.

We welcome learners from B1 (intermediate) upwards. You should be comfortable holding a basic conversation in English — our teachers work with you from there to help you reach true fluency. Complete beginners are better served by a structured course first.

Click "Apply Now" from any page. You'll complete a short profile, answer a few questions about your goals and schedule, and record a brief introduction video. The whole process takes about 10–15 minutes.

The video lets our teachers hear your natural spoken English and get a sense of your specific goals. This helps us make better matches and ensures your first meeting feels like a warm reunion, not a cold introduction.

We review all applications within 3–5 business days. We will email you after our review. If you are approved, the email will include instructions on how to logon and join your first class.

There is no waitlist to apply as a student. But once you are approved and have completed your orientation, there may be times where classes are not immediately available. However, new classes open up on a regular basis, so any delay will be short.

Our teachers are volunteer native English speakers from North America. They come from a wide range of professional backgrounds — from educators and journalists to engineers and artists. All teachers go through a vetting process before joining.

You and your teacher agree on a recurring weekly slot that works for both of you. Sessions are typically 60–90 minutes. Consistency is key — we encourage members to commit to at least one session per week.

It depends on the class you choose! Most classes follow an eight-week module centered on a specific topic, which you can view before enrolling.

Each lesson includes useful vocabulary, idioms, and plenty of speaking activities to help build your spoken English skills. Most lessons also explore what the Bible says about that topic..

Absolutely. We understand that personality and scheduling compatibility matter. If after a few sessions you feel the match isn't quite right, just let us know and we'll help you find a better fit — no awkwardness, no hard feelings.

Yes. Beyond your one-on-one sessions, learners can join optional small-group workshops on specific topic. These are a great way to practice your new skills and meet other learners.

Yes. All of Speak English Cafe is free. There will never be ads or solicitations to upgrade to a paid version. Our teachers volunteer their time because they genuinely enjoy helping people. We're a community, not a marketplace.

We ask members to commit to at least one session per week for 8 weeks. This ensures both you and your teacher can build a real relationship and see meaningful progress.

Life happens. Just let your teacher and our team know in advance and we'll put your account on hold. We'd much rather you return refreshed than burn out and disappear.

Sessions are held using our own interactive video technologies hosted in the Speak English Cafe website.

A device with a working camera and microphone, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space to talk. That's it. No paid subscriptions or downloads needed.
